Jeffery Simmons finished with six tackles and a sack in his Chicago Bears debut, helping the team defeat the Seattle Seahawks 34-17 on Monday night. The 34-point margin ended a 30-game streak for Seattle in which they had not lost by more than four points. The streak was the fourth longest in the Super Bowl era.
Simmons was traded from Tennessee last week in a deal that included two first-round picks. He played with a defensive unit that held Seattle to 252 total yards and one third-down conversion on 11 attempts. Seattle coach Mike Macdonald admitted the team fell short in key areas. "We got beat. No other way to sugar coat it," Macdonald said.
Caleb Williams completed 71% of his passes for 247 yards without turnovers. He took only one sack during the contest. The quarterback wore all black cleats with no visible logo to avoid further league fines. Williams reported that he was fined about $35,000 in the previous two weeks for displaying an unauthorized logo on his shoes.
The Bears established an early lead with a 17-play drive that ended in a one-yard touchdown pass to Luther Burden. Chicago added two field goals in the first half and a one-yard run by D'Andre Swift in the third quarter to reach 20-9. Seattle managed only 81 rushing yards despite the return of Zach Charbonnet and Jadarian Price from injuries.
Sam Darnold threw for 188 yards and two touchdowns for the Seahawks. He connected with Jaxon Smith-Njigba on a 43-yard pass with 30 seconds left in the second quarter. Seattle then trailed 20-17 after DeMarcus Lawrence forced a fumble by Colston Loveland. Darnold followed with a seven-yard touchdown pass to Cooper Kupp, and the team converted a two-point play.
The Bears answered with another touchdown drive. Darnold threw an interception with 4:41 remaining, which set up Swift's third touchdown of the game. The score became 34-17. Jason Myers had a 33-yard field goal attempt blocked in the opening minute of the fourth quarter.
The Bears host Tampa Bay on Sunday night. Seattle hosts Arizona on Sunday. Bears defensive linemen Grady Jarrett and Kenatvius Street left the game with groin and knee injuries, respectively. Seattle defensive lineman Leonard Williams exited the second half with a stinger.
