Jeffery Simmons entered the tunnel on Monday night wearing an orange sleeve and a Bears uniform for the first time. He immediately faced the Seattle Seahawks defense. Simmons, who was acquired from Tennessee the previous week in exchange for two first-round picks, did not take long to settle in. He recorded a sack on Chicago's opening drive. The Bears defeated the Seahawks 34-17 in Seattle.
Simmons finished the game with six tackles, three pressures, and a pass defensed. He also recorded a tackle for loss. His performance was a key factor in a defense that held Seattle to just 252 total yards. The Bears allowed only one third-down conversion out of 11 attempts. Coach Ben Johnson described the new linebacker's impact on the unit as profound.
Caleb Williams led the offense with a clean game. The quarterback completed 71 percent of his passes for 247 yards. He threw no interceptions and was sacked only once. His accuracy set up three short touchdown runs by D'Andre Swift. These scores proved decisive against a Seattle defense that had been among the league's best in stopping the pass.
Williams noted that the game plan required him to stay calm under pressure. Johnson agreed that the offensive script was complex. He said Williams remained collected throughout the contest, even when the play action became chaotic. The Bears (6-2) built a lead of 20-9 by the start of the third quarter. They extended the margin after Seattle's defense held them for most of the first half.
Seattle (4-4) found its first score late in the second quarter. Sam Darnold threw a 43-yard pass to Jaxon Smith-Njigba with 30 seconds remaining in the half. The Seahawks narrowed the gap to 20-17 in the fourth quarter. DeMarcus Lawrence forced a fumble by Colston Loveland, leading to a Darnold touchdown pass to Cooper Kupp. Seattle converted a two-point play to get within three points.
The Bears answered immediately. Swift ran for another touchdown, putting Chicago ahead 27-17. Darnold threw an interception in the fourth quarter with 4:41 left. The pick set up Swift's third touchdown of the game. That score made the final margin 34-17. The result ended a 30-game streak for Seattle in which they had not lost by more than four points.
Coach Mike Macdonald admitted his team was outplayed. He said the Seahawks did not execute the necessary tasks to win while the Bears did. Seattle struggled to establish a ground game despite recent roster moves. The team ran for only 81 yards. Guard Grey Zabel said the offense must improve quickly to take pressure off the quarterback and receivers.
Sam Darnold completed 17 of 34 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns for Seattle. Jason Myers had a 33-yard field goal attempt blocked in the opening minute of the fourth quarter. The loss marked the third defeat for the defending champions in their last four games.
Williams wore black cleats without a visible logo during the game. He reportedly faced a fine of about $35,000 in the prior two weeks for displaying an unauthorized mark. He said he wanted to minimize media attention on that issue during a big week for the team. Grady Jarrett and Kenatvius Street left the game with groin and knee injuries, respectively. Leonard Williams left with a stinger.
The Bears will host Tampa Bay on Sunday night. Seattle will host Arizona on Sunday.
