Middle East security dynamics shifted on Wednesday as regional leaders sought to manage a conflict that has persisted since late February. Iran described a recent high-level meeting in its capital as a move toward dialogue, while Egypt confirmed new diplomatic and military steps to support its neighbor.

On Monday, security officials from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey met with Iranian representatives in Tehran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi posted on social media that the gathering offered a chance to advance peace. He argued that the nations involved should handle their own security matters without the military presence of what he called extra-regional powers. Araghchi did not provide specific details about the agenda or outcomes of the talks.

The discussions occurred against a backdrop of speculation that the region could return to all-out war. Iran has repeatedly attacked neighboring Gulf Arab states since the war began on Feb. 28. Iranian officials stated they targeted U.S. facilities and interests. Gulf countries countered that Iranian strikes also hit civilian facilities and infrastructure.

Simultaneously, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty engaged in telephone talks with his counterparts from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said the conversations focused on political solutions to contain the crisis. Abdelatty spoke directly with Saudi Prince Faisal bin Farhan and UAE’s Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan regarding the ongoing tensions.

Egypt has taken concrete steps to bolster Saudi Arabia’s defenses. The country’s highest security body decided to provide military support to Riyadh to counter attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. Lawmakers approved this measure earlier this week in a closed-door vote. Egypt’s president insisted that the support would be strictly defensive in nature.

The moves by Tehran and Cairo aim to stabilize a region currently facing repeated Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia. The diplomatic efforts represent a coordinated attempt by regional powers to manage the crisis without immediate external military intervention.
