Flavio Bolsonaro has landed in the United States, according to two sources familiar with the matter. The arrival comes just two days after his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, lost the Brazilian presidential runoff election on Sunday.
Incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defeated Jair Bolsonaro in the vote. Brazilian authorities said on Tuesday that they were unaware of Flavio Bolsonaro's specific location. Officials stated they are investigating whether he fled to the U.S.
A senior State Department official told ABC News that the department would allow Flavio Bolsonaro and his family to enter the country. The official confirmed that visas would be issued to them.
Two U.S. officials said the Trump administration had been tracking Flavio Bolsonaro's travel plans. They noted that Washington expected he would attempt to exit Brazil and head for American soil.
Jair Bolsonaro faces an investigation over a sports betting case. Brazilian authorities are also probing the production of a movie about his father. President Donald Trump commented on Monday that the election looked like another rigged election. He made the claim without providing evidence.
Flavio Bolsonaro was the incumbent candidate in the recent race. The U.S. government’s decision to accept him follows the close finish in Brazil. The investigation into his whereabouts continues in Brazil.
