Harry Kane lifted the Ballon d'Or trophy at the London Palladium on Monday, ending a 25 year wait for an English winner. The 33 year old forward received the award in front of a large crowd of fans who had gathered outside the venue in anticipation of the ceremony.

Kane's victory marks a stark contrast to his early career, where he faced frequent criticism and limited playing time. He was released from the Arsenal academy after one season at age eight, with then director Liam Brady describing him as chubby and not very athletic. Years later, Arsene Wenger expressed confusion over the decision to drop the young player.

During his time in the Tottenham Hotspur development program, academy director John McDermott labeled Kane the runt of the litter. In a 2016 interview, McDermott noted that Kane was 30 percent slower than the rest of the group. This early physical disadvantage led to several loan spells at clubs including Leyton Orient, Millwall, Leicester City, and Norwich City before he secured a consistent role at Tottenham.

Kane spent 19 years at Tottenham, a period defined by individual success but a lack of major team honors. He recorded a club record 280 goals in over 430 appearances and won three Premier League Golden Boots. Despite these individual accolades, he lost the 2019 Champions League final and two European Championship finals, earning the nickname of the most famous trophyless player in the sport.

His trophy drought finally broke at age 31 when he won the Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich in the 2024-25 season. Since joining the German club, he has added four more trophies, including another league title and the German Cup. He also became the fastest player to reach 100 Bundesliga goals, achieving the milestone in his 98th league appearance.

Kane's statistical output last season was the highest for a single player since Lionel Messi in 2011-12. He scored 73 goals for club and country, a total that exceeded any other player's haul in the previous year. He remains England's all time top scorer with 91 goals and holds the record for the most goals by an Englishman in the Champions League with 58.

Reflecting on his journey, Kane acknowledged that he did not fit the typical profile of a superstar. He told DAZN that he had to bide his time and work through mental hurdles to maintain self belief. His consistent performance over the last two years, including his evolution into a skilled playmaker, solidified his position as the award winner.
