Harry Kane accepted the Ballon d'Or on Monday night in London, ending a 25-year drought for English players. The Bayern Munich and England striker joined Michael Owen, the last Briton to hold the award, in a list that had gone quiet since 2001. Kane, now 33, stood on stage to receive football's highest individual honor.

"Wow, wow, wow! I am almost speechless," Kane said during his acceptance speech. "Being here in London has made it extra special." He acknowledged the strength of the competition, noting that many world-class players were in the room. He thanked the voters and praised the determination and hard work of his peers.

Kane's path to the trophy relied on a historic 2025-26 campaign. He scored 61 goals in 51 appearances for Bayern Munich across all competitions. Those goals helped the German club secure a domestic league and cup double. His total for club and country reached 73 goals, a figure rarely seen in modern football.

His international performance also weighed heavily in the voting. Kane led England to the World Cup semifinals, scoring six goals during the tournament. He served as the team's driving force throughout the competition. His combination of finishing and leadership defined his role as the squad's captain.

The move to Bayern in 2023 marked a turning point for Kane, who had previously struggled to find consistency at Tottenham Hotspur. That transfer brought trophies that had long eluded him. He developed into a complete forward, capable of scoring various types of goals while also creating chances for teammates. This evolution made him a strong candidate for the award.

The race for the 2026 Ballon d'Or was tight. Kylian Mbappe broke World Cup scoring records, and Lamine Yamal helped Spain win the tournament. However, voters selected Kane based on his consistent output across the entire season. His numbers provided a clear metric for his dominance on the pitch.

Alexia Putellas also won the Ballon d'Or Feminin on the same night. It was her third time receiving the award. The Spanish midfielder won a treble with Barcelona in 2025-26, along with the Spanish Super Cup. She joined London City Lionesses in the Women's Super League in July after 14 years at Barcelona.

Kane now holds the Ballon d'Or alongside his records as England's all-time leading scorer and their record World Cup goalscorer. The award confirms his status as one of the game's greatest strikers. He stands as the first English winner in a quarter century.
