A Brisbane supreme court jury is scheduled to visit the crime scene on Wednesday. The site is located on a rural property in Upper Lockyer, west of Toowoomba. Prosecutors argue that the location is critical to understanding the evidence.

Robert John Crawford, 49, stands accused of murdering his wife, Frances Elizabeth Crawford. The alleged killing took place on July 29, 2024. Her body was discovered near a ride-on lawnmower at the base of a retaining wall. Crawford pleaded not guilty to the charge this past Monday.

Prosecutor Chris Cook described Crawford as a former Royal Australian Air Force pilot. Cook stated that the defendant staged the death to look like an accident. This action was part of a long campaign to obscure the truth. The jury heard that Crawford maintained a double life for years.

Cook characterized the defendant as a manipulator who presented himself as a man of strong Christian values. The prosecutor listed several terms to describe Crawford's behavior, including cheater, adulterer, and philanderer. Four women who allegedly had affairs with Crawford are expected to testify.

The prosecution links the murder to a financial dispute. The couple was close to finalizing a divorce when Frances died. Cook argued that Crawford feared the outcome of the settlement. He wanted to keep the house and avoid splitting his superannuation. The jury was told that financial motivation drove the act.

Frances Crawford had given her husband a list of strict boundaries. These rules included specific conditions that would lead to divorce. The list cited sexual infidelity, emotional infidelity, and the use of pornography as deal breakers. The court heard that she wavered between ending the marriage and giving him a chance to prove himself.

Justice Lincoln Crowley outlined the prosecution's theory of the case. The state alleges that Crawford caused his wife's death through strangulation or blunt-force trauma. The trial is set to continue for three weeks. Up to 47 witnesses are expected to appear. The defense has not yet delivered an opening statement.
