The 2026 Ballon d'Or recipient will be announced at a ceremony at the London Palladium on October 26.

Three players have emerged as the primary contenders for the award: Lamine Yamal of Barcelona, Kylian Mbappe of Real Madrid, and Harry Kane of Bayern Munich. Yamal, a 19-year-old from Spain, and Mbappe, a former World Cup winner from France, have publicly campaigned for the prize. Kane has remained quieter about his own candidacy despite a prolific scoring run.

Predictions from different sources diverge sharply. Avisia, a French data firm, assigns Yamal the highest probability at 23 percent for the 2025-26 season. Kane follows at 21 percent, while Mbappe stands at 19 percent, tied with 2024 winner Rodri. Lionel Messi rounds out the top five at 18 percent, seeking a record ninth title. In contrast, betting markets place Kane as the clear favorite with odds implying a 70 percent chance of victory.

Former and current players have voiced their preferences. Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone supports Messi, noting the forward's performance at age 38 after retiring from international duty. Jude Bellingham backed Kane, citing his work ethic, while Anthony Gordon favored his teammate Yamal. Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni endorsed Mbappe, describing his season as incredible.

Statistical records present a mixed picture. Mbappe led La Liga with 25 goals and the Champions League with 15, while also setting a World Cup record with 12 goals. Kane scored 73 goals last season, the highest total by any player since Messi's 82 in 2011-12. However, neither won major trophies with club or country. Mbappe won no silverware, and Kane took the Bundesliga but finished third in the World Cup.

Yamal offers a different profile. He won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona, despite injuries affecting his personal numbers. Historical trends favor players with major team success, as only four of the last 19 winners lacked a Champions League, World Cup, or continental title in the award year.

If Yamal wins, he will become the youngest recipient in the award's history. The current record is held by Brazil's Ronaldo, who was 21 when he won in 1997.
