Former NBA champion Tristan Thompson is producing a new feature film about the creator of Bitcoin.

The movie is titled Satoshi. It will examine the origins of the cryptocurrency, which launched in 2008 after the global financial crisis. The film aims to show how Bitcoin was designed to bypass traditional financial institutions.

Jason Zada will direct the project. He is known for The Forest and Terrarium. Zada and Nate Atkins wrote the shooting script. It is based on an original screenplay by Cam Cannon. The film is part of a multi-picture deal between Enderby Entertainment and Yellow Camel Studios in Saudi Arabia. Production is scheduled to begin in spring 2027. Filming will take place at JAX Film Studios in Riyadh and in Los Angeles.

Rick Dugdale and Dan Petrie Jr. of Enderby Entertainment are also producing. They are joined by Brian D. Evans of BDE Ventures. Actors Aaron Arnold and Austin Arnold serve as producers as well. A representative for the film stated that AI will be a tool but not the main focus. The production will be traditional, including on-location filming.

Rick Dugdale said in a statement that Bitcoin was released as open-source code by someone who chose to disappear. He noted that the team is not interested in a sanitized version of the story. Dugdale added that the producers are bringing in people who understand the code and the culture.

Thompson commented on the changing financial landscape. He said that money now moves at the speed of the internet. Thompson stated that Satoshi sparked a movement that is reshaping how the world thinks about wealth and freedom.

Brian D. Evans pointed out that traditional media has often misunderstood Bitcoin. He said the film is about getting the narrative right for the world to see. The logline describes a troubled FBI agent partnering with a defense attorney to unmask the elusive creator.

Another film about the subject is currently in post-production. Directed by Doug Liman, it features Casey Affleck, Pete Davidson, Gal Gadot, and Isla Fisher. That project was filmed in a London studio in 20 days and used AI for sets and lighting.
