Branko Bijelic, 51, and Sarah Bijelic, 46, were arrested in Burnaby, British Columbia, on October 30 in connection with the death of Kai Pavlovic. Bijelic faces charges of second-degree murder and indignity to human remains. Sarah Bijelic was charged with manslaughter.
Kai, an 11-year-old New Zealand citizen, went missing after relocating to Vancouver with his mother and stepfather in 2023. Burnaby Royal Canadian Mounted Police received a request for a well-being check on September 26, 2025. At that time, officers believed he was in the care of an unidentified caretaker.
The British Columbia Integrated Homicide Investigation Team assumed control of the case in June 2026. Sergeant Freda Fong stated that the team worked alongside the Burnaby Serious Crimes Unit to locate the boy. Their efforts resulted in the discovery of his remains. Fong described the filing of charges as a major milestone after more than a year of investigation.
Kai's family, who are based in New Zealand, had previously expressed grave concern for his safety. His aunt, Helen Kok, told RNZ that Kai was an exceptionally kind, caring, intelligent, and funny young boy. Kok noted that the extended family from Montenegro and New Zealand loved him deeply and missed him terribly.
Kok described Kai as outgoing, someone who made friends easily, and brave enough to try anything. She stated that the family had lost contact with him and remained devastated by the situation. The family continued to be gravely concerned for his well-being while investigators worked to identify the caretaker.
Sergeant Fong said the team recognized the concern the investigation caused within the community. She expressed that their thoughts were with Kai's loved ones and those affected by the tragedy. The team thanked the public for their assistance and for coming forward with information.
With the case now before the courts, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team will not release further details. The prosecution process continues as the legal system reviews the evidence gathered during the year-long search for the boy.
