Liam Neeson leads the cast of The Mongoose, a new action thriller that hits theaters today. The film marks the directorial debut of Mark Vanselow, a stunt coordinator who has previously collaborated with Neeson on projects like The Naked Gun. The production centers on a cross-country chase driven by a red Shelby Super Snake.
The script was written by Thompson Evans. The story follows Ryan "Fang" Flanagan, a Special Forces commander captured in Afghanistan in 2005. Two decades later, Flanagan is divorced from his wife Tara, played by Marisa Tomei, and still managing post-traumatic stress disorder. He is tracked by Major Walter Pope, a character portrayed by Michael Chiklis.
The plot ignites when Tara, now dating a wealthy lawyer named Todd, asks Flanagan to retrieve her belongings from his home in Arkansas. Todd is home and waves a gun at Flanagan. A fight breaks out, resulting in Todd's death. Flanagan finds his tires slashed and police arriving, so he steals a nearby muscle car to escape.
Vanselow designed the vehicle sequences. The film opens with Flanagan breaking through a roadblock. The narrative then flashes back to explain the events leading to the chase. This structure shows the deterioration of Flanagan's marriage and his wartime trauma before returning to the pursuit.
Flanagan is not alone on the road. He is assisted by his former soldiers Tanker, played by Ving Rhames, and Munch, played by Marcus Thomas. They also rely on the car's artificial intelligence assistant, Helene, voiced by Stella Stocker. The trio works to locate fuel and supplies while evading law enforcement.
The police pursuit is led by two figures. James Tilton, played by Maurice Marvel Meredith, is a former Marine who initially urges Flanagan to surrender. Once the chase enters Texas, Tilton is replaced by Major Pope. Pope is determined to capture Flanagan by any means necessary.
Public interest in the case grows rapidly. Laura Coates, a CNN anchor, appears as herself in the film. She provides round-the-clock reporting on the flight. Her coverage adds context to the crime and details about the suspects. This media attention turns Flanagan into a folk hero in the eyes of the public.
The supporting cast includes Marisa Tomei, Ving Rhames, and Michael Chiklis. Tomei plays Tara, who provides a sounding board for Flanagan during the journey. Rhames and Thomas handle physical interference to keep military helicopters away from the highway. Chiklis portrays the primary antagonist, using excessive force to complete his mission.
The film relies on visual effects to depict Flanagan's past. Scenes from his service in Afghanistan use desaturated filters and montage editing. Neeson portrays his character as even-tempered and cheerful, even when dealing with the stress of the chase. The movie ends without revealing Flanagan's final fate, leaving his status to the audience's interpretation based on the public's support.
