The Philadelphia Flyers outshot the Columbus Blue Jackets 28-6 for the final two periods of regulation on Tuesday night, yet still finished the contest with a 4-3 loss at Xfinity Mobile Arena.

The visitors took a 3-0 lead by the end of the first period. The Flyers went more than half of that opening frame without recording a single shot on goal. Columbus capitalized on a four-on-four power play situation that left the home team scrambling to defend their own net.

This result follows a brief winning streak that saw Philadelphia defeat Anaheim on Saturday. Before that, the team had beaten Ottawa, Colorado, and Buffalo in consecutive games, offering a glimpse of form that vanished completely against Columbus.

The Flyers managed to erase the deficit in the second and third periods. Porter Martone scored a rebound goal in the second period. Trevor Zegras added a goal late in the third by jamming a puck behind Columbus goaltender Cam Talbot's blocker.

In the final seconds of regulation, Jamie Drysdale fell to a knee and allowed a centering pass from Tyson Foerster to bounce in, forcing the game into overtime. The equalizer came with the Flyers playing with an extra attacker.

Overtime ended quickly. Columbus converted consecutive 2-on-0 breakaway chances. Adam Fantilli and Kent Johnson scored on the second opportunity to seal the victory for the visitors.

Head coach Rick Tocchet addressed the performance at Tuesday's morning skate. He noted that while the team was not scoring effectively and the power play struggled, specific systems showed improvement. "We weren't scoring. Obviously, the power play wasn't good. Neutral zone wasn't good. Our defense, like the zone, wasn't good. But if you look [at] each, like, [our] system has been better, our neutral zone regroups have been better, scoring some more goals, power play's been better, I think. So if you analyze that way, yeah, it's good," Tocchet said.

Tocchet acknowledged the need for better consistency. "Now we still gotta work on game management. We still gotta work on 60-minute consistency. I mean, every team's searching for the 60-minute game, right? But the sections of the game, we have improved on, which is a good thing."

The loss extends the Flyers' losing streak in their last four games. Their season record now stands at 3-8-4. The team enters the next stretch of the schedule with a mountain to climb in the standings.

The next scheduled game will determine if the recent pattern of high-scoring second halves can translate into a win. The Flyers remain in a position where every point counts as the season reaches its first month.
