Michael Ferguson won Florida House District 100 on Tuesday night, ending a fifty year run of Republican control in the Broward County seat.
The victory marks a distinct shift in a coastal district that has elected only Republicans since 1976. Ferguson, a U.S. Air Force veteran, defeated Republican Yoni Anijar. The race was open because incumbent state Rep. Chip LaMarca reached the term limit. The district is located entirely within Broward County, an area with a heavy Democratic voting record.
Ferguson grew up in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. He cited his local roots and military background as the foundation for his legislative agenda. His stated goals include lowering property insurance premiums, improving everyday affordability, and protecting coastal infrastructure.
In a statement, Ferguson told voters they elected a Democrat for the first time in nearly five decades. He said rising costs have made it harder for families to manage finances, for young people to settle in the area, and for seniors to remain in long time homes.
The candidate promised to work across party lines. He said his military service taught him to lead with integrity and place others first. He noted that community challenges do not align with political parties, and he intends to address those issues in Tallahassee regardless of a constituent's affiliation.
