William Contreras, a catcher for the Milwaukee Brewers, was named the Most Valuable Player of the World Series on Wednesday in St. Petersburg, Florida. The award came after his team defeated the Tampa Bay Rays four games to one to secure the championship. Contreras became the eighth catcher in history to receive this honor, joining a list that includes Salvador Perez, Gene Tenace, and Johnny Bench.

The 28-year-old veteran, who has been selected to three All-Star games, finished the regular season batting .270 with 18 home runs and a career-high 94 runs batted in. His performance was central to the Brewers winning their fourth consecutive National League Central division title. During the postseason, Contreras adapted quickly to the automated ball-strike system, a technology new to the sport this year.

He led Major League Baseball with 185 challenges and 105 overturns during the regular season. In the playoffs, he was right on 22 of 33 attempts. His work behind the plate extended beyond calls on the mound. He threw out four base runners and successfully won 10 of 13 appeals during the World Series. His aggressive use of the new technology set him apart from other candidates for the award.

Manager Pat Murphy praised Contreras' leadership and defensive instincts. He described the catcher as a pit bull that players should not approach casually because it might bite. Murphy noted that Contreras remained disappointed that his statistics were not higher and that he did not win the Gold Glove award. The manager said he knew before the final game that Contreras would be the MVP.

Contreras also brought a World Series title to Venezuela for the first time. He is one of only five players to win both the World Baseball Classic and the World Series in the same year. He joined Jackson Chourio and Antonio Senzatela on the Brewers roster as players who achieved this feat. The trio joined Alex Bregman and Luke Gregerson on the short list of players with both titles in a single season.

After receiving the trophy, Contreras embraced his older brother, Willson, who plays first base for the Boston Red Sox. Willson won a World Series with the Chicago Cubs in 2016. William Contreras said his brother is his role model and his closest friend. He expressed deep pride in representing his home country, calling the achievement history for Venezuela.

The Brewers had other strong contenders for the MVP award. Cooper Pratt set a rookie record with six consecutive hits and matched the 1951 record for most runs batted in by a rookie in a World Series. Jackson Chourio collected 11 hits, the most in a five-game series. Jacob Misiorowski won two games and allowed one run in 10 two-thirds innings, while Aaron Ashby pitched 5 two-thirds scoreless innings with nine strikeouts.
