Milwaukee's Small-Ball Run: Brewers Claim First World Series Title
The franchise's 58th season ends with a championship won by the team with the second-smallest payroll in baseball.

The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 on Wednesday night to capture their first World Series championship.
The franchise, originally established as the Seattle Pilots in 1969, has competed in Milwaukee for 58 seasons. Its only previous appearance in the World Series occurred in 1982. That team held a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning of the final game before losing 6-3 to the St. Louis Cardinals. The 2026 squad finished the regular season with 103 wins, the most in the majors. They advanced through the postseason with an 11-2 record, which included seven comeback victories and a sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series.
Jacob Misiorowski pitched five and two-thirds scoreless innings for Milwaukee. He allowed two hits and two strikeouts. The right-hander threw 86 pitches, 58 of which were strikes. He left the game due to a right calf cramp. Cooper Pratt contributed two hits and two runs batted in. He set a rookie record for the series with six consecutive hits. Jackson Chourio recorded 11 hits in five games, a series record. William Contreras, named the series most valuable player, hit an RBI double in the sixth inning.
Manager Pat Murphy, who is 67 years old, led the team to victory. He survived a heart attack in 2020. He won the National League Manager of the Year award in both 2024 and 2025. Captain Christian Yelich told fans at Tropicana Field that the team was happy to bring the title home. Owner Mark Attanasio addressed the crowd from the postgame stage, noting that Milwaukee had waited 44 years for the championship.
The Brewers and Rays combined for only four home runs during the series. Milwaukee accounted for three of those. The Brewers scored 32.1% of their runs on home runs, a major league low. Tampa Bay scored 34.4% of their runs on home runs. The Brewers ranked 19th in payroll as of August 31. The Rays ranked 25th. This was the first World Series since 1991 to feature two teams from the bottom half of payrolls.
The Rays have now lost their first three World Series appearances. They fell in 2008 and 2020. Tampa Bay became the fifth team to lose in Game 5 after trailing 3-0. Twenty-one of the 26 teams that lost the first three games of a World Series were subsequently swept. Manager Kevin Cash stated that his team was banged up but grateful for how they carried themselves during the season.
A management lockout is likely to begin on December 2. This potential stoppage could threaten the 2027 season. The dispute centers on owners pushing for a salary cap against the players' association. Owners argue that small-market teams cannot regularly succeed under the current system. This championship arrived for a team in the smallest market in the majors during that ongoing debate.
