Sachem East claimed the Long Island Class AAA girls soccer championship on Sunday night at Farmingdale State, ending a 19 year wait for a local title. The team defeated Oceanside, 1-0, in a penalty kick shootout that followed a scoreless draw through regulation and overtime.
The match was defined by defensive discipline and goalkeeper performance rather than goal production. Oceanside controlled possession and outshot their opponents, yet they failed to register a goal in the 120 minutes of play. Sachem East goalkeeper Paige Seaman recorded nine saves during the initial 90 minutes and added two stops in the shootout, diving to her left to bat down the second and fourth penalty attempts.
The decision came down to the final spot kick. With the count tied at 3-3, sophomore Audrey McCarville stepped up. She struck the ball with her right foot into the bottom left corner, securing the fourth goal for Sachem East. Her teammates Braelin Fernandes, Gabriella Arculeo, and Ella Scotti had converted their respective kicks earlier in the sequence. For Oceanside, Gianna Visone, Natalia Peredo, and Addison Goldstein scored.
Coach Glen Monsen credited the team's resilience despite their youth. The roster features only one senior, captain Aubree Ellis. The squad operated under a collective mandate to secure the title for Ellis. McCarville noted the personal weight of the moment, stating, 'It felt so unreal to do it for my team, to do it for Aubree Ellis, our only senior.'
Oceanside coach Danielle Chiera acknowledged her team's effort but pointed to the lack of finishing. 'We had the ball a lot in their half. Unfortunately, they just couldn't find the back of the net,' Chiera said. She added that her players worked hard and remained resilient throughout the match.
Sachem East will face the champion from Section I or Section IX in a regional final on Saturday. This victory marks the program's first Long Island title since 2007. McCarville emphasized the ongoing momentum, saying, 'We just gotta keep working and pushing through.'
The defensive line, including Aaliyah Hollis and Nicolette Sevimlioglu, played a central role in limiting Oceanside's chances. Monsen described the group as talented, tough, and smart. He said he never guaranteed a victory but maintained belief in the team's capability throughout the season.
