A majority of British adults now view an autumn roast dinner as a direct competitor to the traditional Christmas feast. The finding comes from a survey conducted for the potato and vegetable sides producer Mash Direct. The research polled 1,000 adults across the United Kingdom.

The data indicates that 79% of respondents enjoy an autumn roast just as much as, or more than, the Christmas dinner. This preference is not merely a passive acceptance of the meal. A specific 35% of those surveyed stated they actively favor the autumn roast. In contrast, only 13% said they would choose the Christmas dinner if given the option.

The survey identified comfort as the primary motivation for this shift in eating habits. As temperatures drop and nights lengthen, 48% of participants associated the autumn roast with comforting food. Another 28% cited spending time around the table with family and friends as a major attraction. A further 27% valued the opportunity for cosy nights at home.

Timing plays a role in how households adopt the practice. The research found that 35% of Britons start having roast dinners regularly during October or November. This period marks the beginning of what many consider the peak season for the meal.

The appeal of the autumn roast appears to stem from a lack of rigid expectations. Respondents highlighted the freedom to eat the meal without the stress often associated with holiday cooking. Specifically, 37% said the autumn roast is more enjoyable because there is less pressure for it to be a major occasion. Additionally, 32% appreciated the ability to have the meal whenever they wished, rather than on a fixed date.

There is also a generational divide in these preferences. Among adults aged 18 to 24, 28% favor the Christmas dinner. That figure drops to 9% for those aged 45 to 54. This suggests that older cohorts are more open to enjoying the roast dinner outside of the traditional festive window.

When selecting components for the meal, respondents largely stuck to traditional choices. Roast potatoes were the most popular item, selected by 84% of participants. Meat or a main dish followed at 79%, and Yorkshire puddings were chosen by 58%. Other common sides included stuffing at 24%, carrots at 16%, and mashed potato at 16%.

Mash Direct has partnered with food content creator Ilhan to promote the trend under the name the Ruleless Roast. Ilhan described her preferred version as beef cooked low and slow, served over creamy mashed potatoes and smothered in rich onion gravy. She noted that the meal should include golden roast potatoes on the side. She emphasized that the meal does not need to follow a set of rules, allowing people to bring together the foods they love.

Clare Forster, a representative at Mash Direct, stated that the research shows the autumn roast has a special place in the diet. She explained that without the pressure of a big occasion, people can enjoy a proper roast dinner exactly how they like it. She added that the company believes great food should not require hours in the kitchen or a sense of perfection. The company’s range of sides is designed to make it easier to prepare the meal, allowing more time for eating and socializing.
