Four men stand trial in Winchester for their alleged roles in the sexual abuse of a Swindon woman who was drugged by her husband for years. The proceedings at Winchester crown court focus on how these men were invited to the couple's home and what they believed about the victim's state of mind. The case centers on Joanne Young, who has waived her right to anonymity, and her former husband, Philip Young, who has admitted to the drugging and abuse.
Philip Young, 50, pleaded guilty to multiple charges of drugging and sexually abusing his then-wife, 49, at their Swindon residence. Prosecutors stated that he advertised her online and essentially loaned her out to other men. This arrangement took place over several years. Four other men are currently facing trial for their own specific counts of sexual assault and rape.
Connor Sanderson-Doyle, 32, denies sexual assault by penetration and sexual touching from June 2016. In police interviews read to the jury, he explained he found Philip Young through an adult listing on Craigslist. He described seeing an image of a woman tied up and blindfolded. He said he assumed he was meeting a couple living out their specific kink. He arrived at the house on a motorcycle and kept his balaclava on throughout the visit.
Sanderson-Doyle told investigators he found Joanne Young exactly as pictured in the advertisement: tied and blindfolded. He noted she did not speak but appeared awake. He acknowledged hearing her say no once but interpreted it as a request for a different action rather than a refusal. He stated he got a vibe that she was not enjoying the encounter and left shortly after. He told police he thought he had consent and did not know she was drugged.
Norman Macksoni, 48, from Sharnbrook in Bedfordshire, denies one count of rape from February 2017. He contacted Philip Young through a swingers website using the username dark stranger. Macksoni described the platform as a place for couples to live out fantasies within a large cuckold community. He claimed Joanne Young was totally coherent and that the encounter was just a sex meet. He told officers that Philip Young specifically said she did not like condoms, which is why he did not use one.
Two other defendants are also in the dock. Richard Wilkins, 62, from Toothill in Wiltshire, pleads not guilty to one count of rape and one of assault by penetration. Mohammed Hassan, 38, from Swindon, pleads not guilty to one count of sexual touching. The trial continues as the jury hears further evidence regarding the online advertisements and the interactions at the Swindon home.
