Republican Governor Kelly Ayotte retained her position in New Hampshire on Tuesday. She defeated Democratic challenger Cinde Warmington to secure a second term. The Associated Press called the race as 88% of votes were counted. Ayotte received 302,583 ballots, representing 51% of the total. Warmington collected 279,219 votes, or 47%. The margin of victory stood at 43,364 votes.

The election results reflect a mandate for Ayotte's existing economic approach. Her campaign materials emphasized fiscal restraint and specific regulatory changes. She highlighted the removal of cell phones from classrooms. She also pointed to legislative actions intended to accelerate housing construction. Her platform included a pledge to avoid new taxes. She promised to lower electric bills and support first responders.

Warmington campaigned on a contrasting set of economic and social policies. She proposed a temporary moratorium on new data centers. She argued this pause was necessary until safeguards could be codified. She also sought to suspend the state gas tax temporarily. Warmington attributed high fuel costs to the conflict with Iran. She advocated for the legalization of cannabis and the end of the school voucher system.

Housing policy served as a central dividing line between the two candidates. Ayotte focused on speeding up construction through existing laws. Warmington targeted private equity firms. She proposed banning such firms from purchasing single-family homes. She also recommended appointing a dedicated housing czar. Her plan included expediting permitting processes that she described as delays in development.

The candidates also differed on their stance toward federal policy. Warmington's platform included a promise to fight many policies of President Donald Trump. She criticized Ayotte for not suing to block federal tariffs. She also accused the governor of failing to prevent the loss of millions in public health funding. Ayotte, who previously served as a United States senator and state attorney general, ran on a record of implementing those changes.

Ayotte was first elected governor in 2024. She cited several accomplishments from her first term. These included fixing the bail system and obtaining healthcare funding. She also listed the protection of vulnerable populations as a key achievement. Warmington is a former member of the New Hampshire Executive Council. That body advises the governor and conducts financial oversight for the state.
