Florida State University dismissed head football coach Mike Norvell on Sunday, ending his seven-year tenure in Tallahassee. The decision follows a 36-24 home defeat to Clemson that left the program with a 10-22 record over the last two seasons. University President Richard McCullough confirmed the leadership change in a public statement, citing the need to align the program with high expectations and a tradition of championship athletics.
Norvell arrived in 2020 and initially guided the team to success. His 2023 squad finished 13-1 and captured the ACC Championship before a late injury to quarterback Jordan Travis ended the season. That performance earned Norvell the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year award and the ACC Coach of the Year honor. However, the momentum reversed sharply in 2024, when the team finished 2-10 despite adding a top-10 transfer class that included D.J. Uiagalelei and several players from Alabama.
The 2024 season marked the start of a downward trend that persisted through 2025. The Seminoles scored only 15.4 points per game while allowing 28.0 points per game during that disastrous campaign. In 2025, the team secured the No. 8 ranked transfer class but managed just five wins. This past offseason, the program dropped to No. 28 in transfer class rankings and struggled to find stability at quarterback, a position now held by Ashton Daniels, who has had a difficult season. The team is set to miss bowl eligibility for the third consecutive year.
Financial factors did not prevent the dismissal, despite Norvell having a $46 million buyout clause in his contract. For weeks, observers suggested that the large buyout and a chaotic athletic department might protect his job. Instead, the university moved forward with the change, signaling a willingness to pay the cost to reset the program. The firing also extends to defensive coordinator Tony White, whose unit has allowed 31.6 points per game.
Rick Stockstill will serve as the interim head coach. Stockstill is a former Florida State quarterback and currently serves as the director of scouting. Before moving to Florida State, he spent 18 seasons at Middle Tennessee State University, where he compiled a 113-11 record and led the team to 10 bowl appearances. McCullough expressed confidence in Stockstill’s ability to provide steady leadership during the transition period.
The athletic department is currently without a permanent leader. Florida State fired Michael Alford in September and is seeking a full-time athletic director. According to reports, the university wants a candidate who can generate creative revenue streams for the department. The search for the next permanent head coach will be national, with the university looking for a leader who embraces the school’s standard of excellence.
Norvell leaves Florida State with a 41-39 overall record. His departure closes a chapter that began with a successful four-season run at Memphis, where he posted a 38-16 record and won an American Athletic Conference championship. The next step for the Seminoles is the interim period under Stockstill, followed by a formal search for a new permanent head coach who can stabilize the program and close the gap with larger spending rivals in the ACC.
