AI Giant's Pre-IPO Valuation Turns Early Backers Into Billionaires
As Anthropic approaches a potential public listing at a $2 trillion valuation, the financial stakes for its investors have surged dramatically, with some early checks worth nearly $10 billion.

For the investors who backed Anthropic during its earliest days, the trajectory from a nascent startup to a potential $2 trillion public company has created an unprecedented windfall. While the official IPO is expected later this year, the financial impact is already tangible at the company’s latest private market valuation of $965 billion. This valuation has effectively redefined the wealth of key Venture Capital (VC) firms and individual backers, with some stakes now worth billions of dollars before the public listing even occurs. The shift signals a major consolidation of wealth in the artificial intelligence sector, rewarding those who took significant risks when the company was far less established.
The scale of these gains is evident in the specific holdings of prominent figures and firms. Eric Schmidt, the former Google CEO, made a strategic entry into Anthropic during its Series A round in 2021. At that time, the startup was valued at a modest $461 million according to PitchBook data. Today, his ownership of approximately 1% of the company translates to a personal stake worth nearly $10 billion, even before accounting for the potential upside of the IPO. This single investment has become one of the most valuable positions in the tech portfolio of a former industry leader, illustrating how early access to high-growth AI labs can reshape personal net worths.
Late-stage institutional investors have also reaped substantial rewards, though their entry points were significantly higher. Iconiq, an investment outfit, wrote a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year when the company was already valued at $183 billion. That massive commitment has since appreciated to a value of $17 billion. While this represents a significant return, analysts note that the position has the potential to double in value if the company achieves its projected $2 trillion valuation upon its public listing. The move underscores the appetite for large-scale capital deployment in the AI sector, even at high valuations.
Menlo Ventures, which led Anthropic’s Series D funding round, has invested more than $1 billion in the company over time. This cumulative investment now holds a value of $14 billion. The firm’s sustained involvement highlights the trend of major VC players maintaining deep positions in leading AI labs as they scale. Similarly, Sequoia, a firm long associated with early-stage tech investments, made its first foray into Anthropic only earlier this year. At that point, the company was valued at $380 billion. Sequoia’s $3 billion investment secured roughly 1% ownership, meaning the firm has already more than doubled its initial outlay in a remarkably short period.
The list of beneficiaries extends to firms with more recent or smaller initial commitments. Sound Ventures, launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, invested $35 million in Anthropic’s 2023 Series C round. The firm subsequently funneled an additional $400 million into the company, resulting in a stake that is now worth billions. It is worth noting that Kutcher left Sound Ventures earlier this year to launch a new VC firm, but the financial legacy of the investment remains significant for the original entity. This case highlights how even mid-sized investments can yield massive returns when directed toward a sector-leading AI company.
Perhaps the most striking example of exponential growth belongs to Spark Capital. As the only VC firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic, Spark invested $75 million during the 2023 Series C round when the company was valued at $5 billion. That position has since ballooned more than ninetyfold to a current value of $7 billion. This transformation from a modest $75 million check to a $7 billion asset exemplifies the extraordinary multiples achieved in the AI boom. For Spark, the board seat and the financial return have created a unique position of influence and profitability within the industry.
The stakes for these investors are not merely financial; they represent a benchmark for the AI economy’s maturation. As Anthropic moves toward its expected IPO, the valuation gap between its current private price and the projected $2 trillion public market value represents a massive opportunity for capital appreciation. For early backers like Schmidt and Spark Capital, the journey from the $461 million and $5 billion valuations to the current $965 billion mark has already delivered historic returns. For later-stage entrants like Iconiq and Sequoia, the focus shifts to capturing the final leg of growth into the public markets.
This concentration of wealth among a select group of backers underscores the high barriers to entry and the significant rewards in the AI landscape. The data suggests that those who secured positions during the lower-valuation rounds have captured the largest share of the upside. As the IPO date approaches, the market will closely watch how these stakes are valued in the public sphere, potentially cementing Anthropic’s investors as some of the most successful financiers of the decade. The story is less about the technology itself and more about the financial architecture that has supported it, turning early belief into billions.
